Painting a Brick House on the Gold Coast & Tweed

Turning dated face brick into a clean, modern exterior is one of the biggest changes you can make to a home. Done properly — cleaned, repaired, sealed and finished with two coats of Haymes — painted brick looks sharp for years. Done cheaply, it peels within a season.

How we paint brick so it lasts

    1. 1. Check the brick first

We look for rising damp, efflorescence (white salt bloom), cracked mortar and moving joints. Paint traps moisture in brick that's already wet, so any water problem gets sorted before a brush comes out.

    2. 2. Pressure clean and neutralise

Brick holds dust, mould and salt from coastal air. We pressure clean, treat mould, and brush off loose salts so the sealer bonds to the brick, not to dirt.

    3. 3. Repoint and repair

Crumbling mortar joints are raked out and repointed and hairline cracks filled. Paint won't hide failed mortar — it shows it up.

    4. 4. Masonry sealer coat

A full coat of masonry sealer soaks into the porous face and stops the brick drinking the finish coats unevenly. Skipping this is why painted brick goes patchy.

    5. 5. Two finish coats

Two coats of premium Haymes exterior acrylic, back-rolled into the mortar joints and textured face so there are no pinholes for water to get behind.

Painted brick house: is it right for yours?

    Good candidates

Sound, dry face brick with dated colours, mismatched extensions, or patchy old repairs you want to tie together under one colour.

    Fix first

Rising damp, leaking gutters, active salt bloom or cracked mortar. We'll tell you honestly if the brick needs repairs before it's worth painting.

    Painting brick — common questions

Can you paint a brick house?
Yes. Face brick takes paint well as long as it's dry, clean and sealed first. The finish lasts when the prep is right — pressure cleaning, salt and mould treatment, mortar repairs, a masonry sealer, then two finish coats.
How much does it cost to paint brick walls?
As a guide, painting the render or brick walls of a home runs $4,500–$9,000 depending on size, height and how much repointing the brick needs. We measure on site and give a fixed price in writing.
Is painting brick a good idea on the coast?
It can protect brick that's started to weather and lets you modernise a dated 70s or 80s face-brick home. Near the beach the prep matters more — salt has to be washed and brushed off before sealing, or it pushes the paint off from behind.
Why is my painted brick peeling?
Almost always moisture or salt behind the paint, or a finish applied over unsealed brick. We strip the failed paint, find where the water is coming from, then seal and repaint properly.
Can painted brick be returned to natural brick?
It's possible but slow and expensive, and rarely looks original again. Painting brick is best treated as a permanent decision — which is why we help with colour selection before we start.
How long does it take to paint a brick house?
A single-storey brick home usually takes 5–8 working days including cleaning, drying time, repairs and three coats. Double-storey homes take longer because of scaffolding.
